Oxford Middle School student Sagan Karthikeyan took home the first-place award at the annual Lafayette County Spelling Bee recently.
The Oxford School District hosted the annual Spelling Bee at the Oxford Early Childhood Center.
Karthikeyan ended the competition by correctly spelling the final word, “crustacean.”
Students from the Lafayette School District and Magnolia Montessori School also participated. The competition featured the top spelling bee winners of each school competition with 15 total participants in third through eighth grade.
The annual county spelling bee lasted more than two hours.
Second place went to another Oxford Middle student, Diya Jobin, and third place went to an Oxford Intermediate School student, Raymond Sang.
The three winners will move on to the semi-final online spelling bee, of which the winner will advance to the Mississippi Spelling Bee in the spring.
