Renovations are underway on the landmark Lafayette County Courthouse located in the center of the Oxford Square.
The county Board of Supervisors unanimously awarded a $2,280,000 low-bid contract to J.P. General Contractors on June 19.
The current structure was completed in 1872 to replace the original courthouse burned by Union troops during the Civil War. The courthouse houses the Circuit Clerk and courtrooms for Circuit Court.
The courthouse is prominently featured and described in the works of William Faulkner, as part of his stories involving the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi.
