The Mississippi Association of Community Colleges, or MACC, unanimously voted to support the changing of the current state flag, yesterday, June 23.

The group is composed of the state’s 15 community college presidents, including Northwest Mississippi Community College, which has a campus in Oxford. 

“Our thoughts are that the current Mississippi flag is divisive,” said Dr. Michael Heindl, the president of Northwest Mississippi Community College. “A new flag can be one that unites all Mississippians as we work for a more prosperous future.”

The statement did not point toward a specific design for the new state flag.

“The flag, and most importantly, the process that designs it, should embody values that Mississippians hold dear,” Heindl said. “Patriotism, respect for one another, and unity in working together to build a bright future. Any design that unites our great state, rather than dividing us, would be better. Our new state flag should represent a progressive future and not the past.”

Northwest Mississippi Community College has locations in Senatobia, DeSoto and Oxford.  The Oxford campus sits on approximately 18 acres of land off Belk Boulevard.

At the Oxford campus, students can choose from a variety of academic pathways, careers and technical programs ranging from business and office technology, paralegal technology, surgical technology, cosmetology, health care assistant and practical nursing.

They offer classes throughout the day and evening hours. Students have access to smart classrooms, computer labs, state of the art science labs, full-service bookstore, library, workforce development center, as well as student and administrative services.
