While Oxford is starting to slowly return to business as usual, one summer event is not returning this year.
The annual LOU 4th of July celebrations were canceled on Tuesday, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing guidelines. The decision was made by the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce, which hosts most of the events, including the fireworks display at Oxford-University Stadium.
The Chamber announced their decision via its daily LOU View email.
“It is with much regret and sadness that we have to inform you that this year’s LOU 4th of July annual celebration is cancelled due to COVID-19,” the Chamber’s statement read. “We are already looking forward to gathering with you at many events as things open up this summer and fall, and are already making plans for 2021 to be the best 4th of July celebration ever.”
According to Governor Tate Reeves’ latest executive order, which went into effect on June 1, groups larger than 50 people are currently prohibited for outdoor gatherings. It is not known how long that order will stay in place.
During Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting, Mayor Robyn Tannehill announced the cancellation during her mayor’s report.
“While we are seeing many things reopening, we are seeing some events that just can’t be held due to all of the restrictions in place,” Tannehill said. “We are sad to see one of our favorite celebrations canceled, but hopefully the one next year will be bigger and better than ever.”
