The Oxford Film Festival is continuing on with its virtual edition as it enters its fifth week.
This week’s films run through May 22 through 29 and centers around several documentaries covering a wide range of topics including transgender sex workers in “Queen of Lapa” to synchronized figure skating in “Life in Synchro.”
“Our audiences have become accustomed to the Oxford Film Festival bringing the world to them via the documentary films we program,” said OFF executive director Melanie Addington. “‘Queen of Lapa’ and ‘Life in Synchro’ are vastly different films, but share that sense of discovery, whether it be a transgender sex workers community in Brazil or the amazing women that make synchronized skating a sport that will surprise and excite you.”
The Black Lens Narrative Shorts block is also available with the Week Five offerings. There are six different short films that are featured in the 89-minute block that cover the African-American experience in Mississippi and throughout the region and country.
In OFF’s third Fest Forward block of this virtual fest, there are six short films that center on an immigrant coming to Tennesee in “Muñe,” the world of digital media in “Break Through the Abyss” and in “Tingle Monsters” an ASMR vlogger with a devoted fan base returns from an extended absence with a livestream that gets out of hand.
“It’s also exciting to give a platform to the filmmakers and stories delving into the black experience in Mississippi, Memphis and this country through the Black Lens Narrative shorts program and the expected, yet unexpected cinematic visions our Fest Forward programs always deliver.”
