Obituary – Allen Francis Smith

Allen Francis Smith, 79, of Abbeville, Miss., passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, at home. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Abbeville United Methodist Church in Abbeville. Dr. Billy Ray Stonestreet will officiate.
He was born April 17, 1940, to Waddie Clyde & Frances Ford Smith in Chicago, Ill. After growing up in Belzoni and graduating from Belzoni High School, he practiced his barber profession in his hometown for 14 years before moving to Greenwood in 1975. He then owned and operated a barber shop in Greenwood for 35 plus years before his retirement. He was an avid musician who played with a variety of groups through the years. He enjoyed being the third drummer of Mississippi-born The Original Rolling Stones. He served his community as a member of the Mississippi National Guard and Belzoni volunteer fireman. He was also an avid sportsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and being a member of Abbeville United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Retha Sherry Eldridge Smith. He is survived by three children, Allen F. Smith, Jr. (Pam), of Oxford, Crystal D. Smith, of Madison, Miss., and Leslie Woods (Celeste), of Kosciusko, Miss.; two siblings, Carl E. Smith, of Isola, Miss., and Sheila Outlaw (Joe), of Silver City, Miss.; 5 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
In keeping with Allen’s giving spirit, his remains will be donated to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS.
