A prayer and justice rally to support alleged police brutality victim Davidtron Logan will take place Monday, Aug. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
Hosted by Logan’s attorney, Carlos Moore of the Cochran Firm-Mississippi Delta division, the rally will be held at Spring Hill MB Church in Water Valley.
According to Moore, his client was “brutally beaten” by officers with the Water Valley Police Department and Yalobusha County Sheriff’s Department after being stopped during a routine road block on July 18.
The Yalobusha County Sheriff’s Department declined the EAGLE’s request for comment on the incident, but Sheriff Lance Humphreys disputed Moore’s story in an interview with the Associated Press.
Prominent civil rights attorneys Lee Merritt and Ben Crump will be in attendance.
Merritt, who also practices with the Cochran firm, specializes in police brutality cases. He is best known for his work representing Dallas man Mark Hughes in July 2016, who was mistakenly identified as the shooter who gunned down five Dallas police officers during a police brutality protest.
The website The Root ranked him No. 8 on its 2017 list of the 100 most influential African Americans between the ages of 25 and 45.
Crump has worked on a variety of high-profile civil rights cases. He represented the family of teenager Trayvon Martin, as well as the families of Michael Brown and Tamir Rice, among others.
December 2017, Crump investigated the murder of Tupac Shakur in the television documentary series “Who Killed Tupac?” The show narrates an investigation led by Crump who works with Tupac’s brother, Mopreme Shakur.
