Obituary – Nelda Suzanne Thornton Spruiell

Nelda Suzanne Thornton Spruiell, 69, died Monday, July 1, 2019, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. The Memorial Service will be Friday, July 5, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Oxford-University United Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Black and Rev. Chris McAlilly officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the atrium at the church. Innichement will be held in the Oxford-University United Methodist Church columbarium. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Lubbock, Texas, to the late Walter Bruce and Loise Marie Ragland Thornton, Suzanne worked as a fundraising consultant for the Princeton University and other private schools. A longtime Methodist, she was a member of OUUMC and, throughout her life, was active in nine United Methodist Churches across the country, even working as a secretary in several churches she attended. Locally at OUUMC, she established the Sojourners Sunday School Class. Her servant’s heart led her to volunteer with the Red Cross and The Pantry in Oxford where she often purchased food to stock the shelves.
Survivors include her husband, Tony P. Spruiell, of Oxford; a daughter, Kristen S. MacAdams, and her husband, Nathaniel, of McDonald, Pa.; a son, Patrick Spruiell, and his wife, Jennifer, of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Jackson Thornton, of Lakeway, Texas; and six grandchildren, Julia Spruiell, Duncan MacAdams, Annabelle MacAdams, Ainsley MacAdams, Caitlin MacAdams and Walt Spruiell.
