OMAHA, Neb. — Mississippi State and Vanderbilt will wait an extra day — hopefully — to walk in the Nebraska sun.

With rain forecast in the Omaha area for most of Tuesday night and one game already delayed, Tuesday’s College World Series game between Mississippi State and Vanderbilt was postponed until 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The start time is approximate. Tuesday afternoon’s elimination game between Louisville and Auburn was delayed in the fifth inning with Louisville leading 4-1. The NCAA hoped to resume the game late Tuesday night, but if they weren’t able to then the Cardinals and Tigers will play at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Mississippi State and Vanderbilt would then begin 65 minutes after the first game’s completion. That game will televised on either ESPN or ESPN2.

Another elimination game between Florida State and Texas Tech is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials sometimes decide to delay or postpone CWS games when rain is imminent, as was the case Tuesday. NCAA director of championships and alliances Randy L. Buhr said after discussions with meteorologists and stakeholders, the thought was that there would be a big enough window of decent weather to get in a significant portion of the Louisville-Auburn game, if not all of it.

“We got half of it in, so that was a positive,” Buhr said.

Another reason officials wanted to start the afternoon game: There could be more inclement weather later in the week, Buhr said.

The forecast is favorable for Wednesday, but there are rain chances Thursday and Friday. Had the forecast been clear for the rest of the week, Buhr said, it might have been decided to postpone both Tuesday games.
