Abbey Latham’s grand slam in the bottom of the fourth lifted No. 5 seed Ole Miss over No. 12 Mississippi State as the Rebels beat the Bulldogs 9-4 in the first round of the 2019 SEC Softball Tournament in College Station, Texas.
The Rebels trailed 3-1 before taking a 4-3 in the fourth. Latham would then hit a grand slam to cap a 7 run inning that would give the Rebels an 8-3 lead after four innings.
Ole Miss scored their nine runs, which are the most in program history in an SEC tournament game, on just four hits. Mississippi State pitchers Emily Williams, who took the loss, and Grace Fagan walked eight Rebel batters and hit two others.
The Rebels entered the game on a four-game losing streak in which they only scored six runs total.
Ole Miss will play No. 4 seed Kentucky in the second round Friday at 10 a.m. CT on SEC Network.
