Barbara Garrett Mitchell, 78, of Oxford, Mississippi, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2019, at The Blake in Oxford. The memorial service will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019, at 3 p.m. at Oxford-University United Methodist Church in Oxford with Rev. Eddie Rester and Rev. Chris McAlilly officiating. The visitation will be held in the atrium at the church prior to the service from 2 p.m. until service time. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in McGehee, Arkansas, on September 23, 1940, to the late David Hugh and Dorothy Sue Ragland Garrett, Barbara raised her boys in West Memphis, Arkansas, then moved to Brandon, Mississippi, where she was employed for 30 years as an executive assistant with McCarty-Holman and Parkway Properties. She was a member of Oxford-University United Methodist Church.

Barbara was an avid tennis player, and enjoyed playing bridge and volunteering in any capacity. She could also keep any plant alive and often “rescued” dying plants from friends and family. Her true joy came from spending time with her sons and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a person of truth, kindness, and the most giving spirit who always put her family first.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Mae Thompson; and twin brothers, Paul and David Garrett. She is survived by two sons, Brad Mitchell and his wife, Sally, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Kevin Mitchell and his wife, Camille of Oxford; two grandsons, Garrett Mitchell of Atlanta, Georgia, and Grant Myers of Indianapolis; two granddaughters, Lily Mitchell and Julia Mitchell of Oxford.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Mitchell’s memory may be made to The Pantry, P.O. Box 588, Oxford, MS 38655 or Oxford-University United Methodist Church, 424 S. 10th Street, Oxford, MS 38655.
