**UPDATE: Southbound and northbound lanes on I-55 are now open, however, the right lane near MM 242 will remain closed until further notice.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol has closed 1-55 between U.S. 278 (Highway 6 East) and Hentz Road due to a hazmat situation.
An 18-wheel tanker carrying 25,000 pounds of sulfur overturned and caught on fire. Evacuations were ordered for residents living within a half-mile of the scene. Two police officers were injured trying to rescue the tanker driver, who suffered severe burns and was transported to a local hospital, according to reports.
Authorities estimate that I-55 will be closed for about two hours.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
