Another school year is almost in the books

How the time flies.
That’s an old cliché that sticks around for a reason. It’s applicable today because it is the first of May, meaning that another school year is close to ending.
Our local schools are beginning the final month, while Ole Miss students are already in their final week of classes. Exams begin next week, and then the university and the city slow down for a few months.
Education is this community’s biggest business so its season — the annual school calendar — is our busy season. We mark time here more by August, the beginning of school, and May, the end of school, than we do by January 1 and December 31, the traditional beginning and ending of the year.
We are excited for each new year to begin, as the community buzzes with the excitement of opportunity and learning. But we won’t deny looking forward to the culmination of another year, providing a moment to regroup and catch our breath, planning for another year of excellence.
There’s still some class time left, but already summer plans are being made and warmer weather that feels more like summer is arriving along with the first of May. Soon, another year of teaching and learning will be in the books for Ole Miss and Oxford.
