As with all communities, Oxford has certain traditions during the fall season.

On top of football tailgating in the Grove, the pumpkin patch at St. Peter’s and harvest festivals at many of the local schools and churches, the One Night Stand at the Ole Miss Motel has become a staple for many arts enthusiasts as the annual arts show will return for its 11th year.

For this year, organizer Erin Austen Abbott has invited fewer artists in the hopes that visitors can really get to know each artist and support them by purchasing their work during the show. There will be a preview from 5 to 6 p.m. which is a paid event that includes dinner for $2. From 6 to 9 p.m., the show is free to attend, and spotlights artists who each get a hotel room for the night to transform into a gallery displaying their art. Many artists get quite clever in the usage of their rooms, taking out beds, rearranging furniture and bringing in props to make a pop-up gallery for the night with an art installation feel.

The artists for this year have been announced and include Jonathan Kent Adams of Oxford who has participated for the last several years, and is known for his wonderful renderings of the human figure. From Memphis will be Reid Mitchell and also lo-fi who has also participated in the show in years past. Meredith C. Bullock will be coming from Nashville and Ashleigh Coleman will travel from Jackson Adrienne Brown David, an artist living in Water Valley has shown her work at the hotel show for several years and always brings a variety of work including portraits and sketches in acrylic, ink and pencil.

Also coming from the capital city of Jackson, Miss., Kate Freeman will participate this year and closer to home will be Michael Foster from here in Oxford. Andrew Leggett is coming from Los Angeles and The Living Room Gallery which is Abbott’s gallery in Water Valley, will also have a room in the show.

The premise of the show is simple. Show up and park across the street from the motel, ride your bike or walk as there is no parking on the premises. This is a functioning hotel, and the lot is reserved for people staying there. Once you get there, you will walk from room to room to see each artist and their work.

Expect to see lots of people of all ages, and it is possible you will run into lots of people you already know.

This is a fun event that is very popular in town and brings large crowds. There will be food available for sale and the hotel is located at 1517 University Ave in Oxford.
