Melvis Laderal McCormick, 86, passed this earthly life on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS after a lengthy illness. He was born April 7, 1931 in Calhoun City, MS to the late parents of Ira and Euris Tutor McCormick. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and husband who had a smile for everyone he met. Melvis was a faithful member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church until his health failed him. Melvis worked for Weyerhauser from 1974 until his retirement in 1983. He was devoted to his country serving in the Mississippi National Guard for over 27 years. He also served in the U.S.Army during the Korean Conflict. Melvis greatest hobby was football and cheering on the Ole Miss Rebels, coon hunting, his horses and mowing grass.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and the mother of his children Jimmie Nell Lee McCormick, his second wife Bobbie Tharpe McCormick, two sisters, Idell York, Dorothy Harville, and two great-grandchildren.
Survivors are two daughters, Cindy (Ricky) Cowsert, Bruce, MS, Lisa (Tim) Swords, Bruce, MS; a son, Tony (Judy) McCormick, Oxford, MS; a sister, Bobbie Frizzell (Harvey) Watkins, Abbeville, MS; five brothers, E.L. (Louise) McCormick Bruce, MS, J.M. (Virginia) McCormick Bruce, MS, J.D. (Virginia) McCormick, Houlka, MS, Ottis Wayne (Jimmie) McCormick, Saltillo, MS, Clovis (Alice) McCormick, Bruce, MS; six grandchildren, Jason McCormick, Brad Hensley, Matt Swords, Dut Swords, Jenna Hillhouse, Kayla McCormick and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 22, 2017 at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce, MS with Bro. Wayne Cobb and Bro. Darrell Logan officiating. Interment was held at Mt. Moriah Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideons International or Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
