The Double Decker Arts Festival weekend will end Sunday with a Gospel Choir Showcase on the Square that will not only raise spirits but funds for the Oxford School District.
The event will feature the University of Mississippi Gospel Choir and other local acts including Union Hill from Etta, Men of Integrity from Taylor, Everdale from Water Valley, East St. Peter from Abbeville, Psalm 150 from Oxford, the Harmonious Harmoneers from Oxford and Clear Creek MB Church from Oxford.
Kataria Webb, who works in the Bramlett Elementary cafeteria, organized the music for the event.
It’s the fifth year for the gospel showcase that raises funds for Good Food for Oxford Schools. This year’s goal is $7,400 to support a FoodCorps service member. FoodCorps is a nationwide team of leaders that connect kids to real food and helps them grow up healthy. Service members focus on three areas of service — hands-on learning, healthy school meals and promoting a school-wide culture of health.
GFOS Director Eleanor Green said the district hopes to raise enough funds to have two FoodCorps service members.
The Gospel Choir Showcase starts on the Sunday following Double Decker while so many are in town and to bring the weekend to a close on a positive note.
“Gospel music sets a warm tone in hearts,” Green said. “It delivers a message that gives you hope, peace and love for your fellow man. Double Decker weekend is filled with a variety of events and to close out with a Gospel Showcase is like putting the icing on a wedding cake.”
