A failed robbery led to a 10-year prison sentence for an Oxford man.

Aunree Dennis, 23, was arrested in December 2014 for robbing a man after giving him a ride to an ATM.

The victim told investigators with the Oxford Police Department that Dennis gave him a ride from the Square to an ATM and then to his residence on Hathorn Road. Dennis pulled a gun out and attempted to take the victim’s money. A fight ensued and Dennis fled the scene and was later apprehended by OPD officers.

In January, Dennis pleaded guilty to robbery with a deadly weapon in the Lafayette County Circuit Court and was sentenced to 15 years in prison; however, five years were suspended. After he is released, should he violate probation, a judge can order him back to prison to serve the remaining five years.

Shooting leads to prison sentence

An Oxford man will serve five years for shooting someone five times.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, Larry Poole Jr., 31, shot a man in May, 2016 three times after a fight in Abbeville.

The victim was seriously injured but survived the assault.

Court records say the shooting occurred after a disagreement between the two men.

Poole pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in January at the Lafayette County Circuit Court and was sentenced to 20 years in prison; however, 15 years were suspended, leaving Pole to serve five years.
