Lafayette County man killed by roller packer

A Lafayette County resident was killed Thursday night during a construction accident off County Road 101.
According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, Melvin Joe Brooks, 60, was driving a roller packer on a house construction site at 452 CR 101 at about 6 p.m. when the roller packer turned and rolled over Brooks.
Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy pronounced Brooks dead at the scene.
According to a family friend, Brooks loved to hunt and fish and had worked in the construction field for most of his life. He has two adult children and three grandchildren. He was known by friends as “Snake” and was known to be a “fun-loving, down to earth man.”
