Heard Wylie Butler

OXFORD — Heard Wylie Butler, 80, died Saturday, June 11, 2016, at Brookdale in Oxford. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Oxford-University United Methodist Church with the Rev. Warren Black and the Rev. Eddie Rester officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 3:30 p.m. until service time at the church. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, she was a longtime member of Oxford-University United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the choir and taught Sunday school. After raising her family, her love of learning led her to earn her Masters in History and English from Ole Miss. She taught Greek and Latin for several years at the University of Mississippi and then Latin at Oxford-University School. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and studying abroad.

Survivors include her daughter, Heard Butler Critchlow of Union City, Tennessee; two sons, Robert A. Butler, III of Haslet, Texas and William Butler of Huntsville, Alabama; her former husband, Robert Butler Jr.; sister, D.B. King of Oxford; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
