TOPEKA, Kansas — James Wesley Hughes, 64, of Waverly, Kansas, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at the Stormont-Vail Healthcare, in Topeka, Kansas. A memorial service will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, Kansas. A memorial service will also be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. the Faith Baptist Church in Oxford.

Born in Batesville, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1970-76 and 1985-87. He was also a fireman in Oxford. He went into law enforcement and worked for the Burlington Police Department for a year before joining the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office from 1990-94 and 1997-2008, when he retired.

He is survived by his wife Joan Hughes of Waverly, Kansas; two sons, James E. Hughes of Victorville, California and Doug Hughes of Lebo, Kansas; daughter, Melissa Ann Smith of Oxford; three sisters, Martha Chrestman and Betty Chrestman, both of Oxford, and Jean Conner of Coffeeville; and eight grandchildren.
