Egg Bowl: live updates and score

Published 6:49 pm Thursday, November 22, 2018

OXFORD – Thanksgiving evening here at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and we’re live from the 2018 Egg Bowl. Mississippi State comes to town at 7-4 (3-4 SEC) to take on 5-6 Ole Miss (1-6 SEC). The Rebels won’t be playing in a bowl game tonight, and the Bulldogs are already qualified.

This game is all about Mississippi. Head coach Matt Luke said early in the week that the game is grounds for 365-day bragging rights. With the Rebel season winding down, and no bowl game on the schedule, bragging rights is all they will be playing for.

FINAL SCORE: Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 35.

A one yard touchdown from Aeris Williams of MSU and things are getting ugly. Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 35. 7:21 4Q.

Things are getting ugly here. AJ Brown scores, but punches fly after. Matt Corral right in the middle of it – helmet comes off. C.J. Moore, Jamal Peters, Cameron Dantzler, Willie Gay Jr. all ejected. Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 28. End of 3rd.

Maurice Smitherman intercepts a beautiful deep ball from Matt Corral. He just ripped the ball away from Lodge on that one. Ole Miss 3- Mississippi State 28. 3:24 3Q.

Matt Corral back in at quarterback for Ole Miss. With this season all but in the books, some flashes by the young QB in this second half could be something positive to take moving into 2019. Corral didn’t look too comfortable on that drive though. A turnover on downs at the Bulldog 39 ends the drive. Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 28. 7:33 3Q.

Ole Miss defense forces a three-and-out to start the half. Ta’amu throws an interception two plays later. Bulldogs need only 3 plays to go 19 yards for the score. Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 28. 10:42 3Q.

HALFTIME: Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 21.

Ole Miss corner Javien Hamilton gets on the questionable end of a pass interference penalty. Deddrick Thomas hauls in the touchdown pass on the next play. Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 21. 0:25 2Q.

Ole Miss offense does nothing with that chance. Another three-and-out. Fantastic 65-yard punt by Mack Brown to pin the Bulldogs inside their own 10. Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 14. 3:28 2Q.

The Rebel defense is starting to come alive. That’s consecutive three-and-out’s forced. OleMiss with a chance here to cut it to one score. Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 14. 4:17 2Q.

Ole Miss moves the ball this time. Dawson Knox gets 5-yards on a 4th and 3, but they decide to kick on the subsequent 4th and 5. Luke Logan’s 32yd FG is good and the Rebels now trail by 11. Ole Miss 3 – Mississippi State 14. 6:46 2Q.

Rebels get the third down stop this time and force a punt. Will take over at their own 33-yard-line. Ole Miss 0 – Mississippi State 14. 10:40 2Q.

Jordan Ta’amu back in at quarterback. Outcome? No different. Ole Miss is punts and MSU will be taking over at their own 25. Ole Miss 0 – Mississippi State 14. 12:03 2Q.

Mississippi State gashed the Rebels on the ground that yard. Seemed like they got a big chunk play every time the carried the ball. Fitzgerald punches it in from 8-yards out for the score. Ole Miss 0 – Mississippi State 14. 14:04 2Q.

FIRST QUARTER: Ole Miss 0, – Mississippi State 7. Ground game telling the story in the first quarter. MSU with 122 yards on the ground. Ole Miss has 3.

Matt Corral in at quarterback for the third Ole Miss drive. He can play as much as the Rebels want him to tonight without burning his redshirt. Advanced to the Bulldog 46 before the punt. Ole Miss 0 – Mississippi State 7. 2:34 1Q.

Bulldogs take advantage of a short field and punch it in with a 6-yard run by Kylin Hill. Ole Miss 0 – Mississippi State 7. 5:02 1Q.

Huge penalty against the Bulldogs. Illegal equipment – two players with the same jersey number on the field – gives the Rebels a first down when they were punting. Ta’amu fumbles the next play and MSU will take over at the Ole Miss 45 after an unsportsmanlike penalty. Ole Miss 0 – Mississippi State 0. 8:11 1Q.

Both offenses relatively stagnant thus far. Two punts from midfield. Ole Miss 0 – Mississippi State 0. 9:18 1Q.
