While Oxford resident Lona Waller may only have three children attending Oxford schools, she spends countless hours helping all Oxford School District students have the best experience they can while going to school.
Waller was named the Oxford School District’s Parent of the Year Monday during the Board of Trustees monthly meeting.
Waller serves as the PTO president for Oxford High School, the treasurer for the Charger Booster Club, is a member of the Oxford School District Health and Wellness Council, is chairman of Good Food for Oxford Schools at Della Davidson and has served on the OHS AdvancED team.
“She has a servant’s heart and goes above and beyond to help the members of the Charger family,” OSD Superintendent Brian Harvey read from a nomination letter on Waller’s behalf.
Each school in the district selects its Parent of the Year.
“We review each nomination and make a selection at the district office,” Harvey said. “All of these parents are deserving of this award as they all do so much for the district.”
Waller is now a nominee for the Mississippi Department of Education’s Parent of the Year.
“What an honor it is to work with everyone in the district and how lucky we all are to be in the Oxford School District,” Waller said after accepting her award Monday. “And what an amazing honor to be standing here along with these amazing ladies.”
Waller and her husband, Dr. Jason Waller have three children currently in the OSD– Sarah Katherine, 12th grade; Mary Marshall, 10th grade; and Andrew, fourth grade.
Other parents who won Parent of the Year for each school are: Maggie Miller, Bramlett Elementary; Ashley Wilkinson, Oxford Elementary; Barbara Jim Turner, Della Davidson; Betsy Smith, Oxford Intermediate; and Mary Margaret Case, Oxford Middle School.
