Fire deaths aren’t a regular occurrence in Oxford and Lafayette County, thank goodness.

We are stunned and saddened any time a home catches fire and someone is trapped inside, unable to get out before it’s too late. It does happen here, of course, as it did in this week’s fire at a home on Thomas Street, claiming the life of an 84-year-old Oxford man.

Fire is a danger that we don’t always give the fear it deserves because it isn’t as common in the 21st century, because homes are built better and better equipped with smoke detectors and firefighters are better equipped and trained than ever before.

We are blessed in Oxford and Lafayette County to have strong forces of full-time and volunteer firefighters who do an exceptional job in keeping lives and property safe. They are dedicated professionals who give us comfort.

Sometimes, however, the unthinkable happens. A fire starts, spreads fast and there are deadly results beyond anyone’s control.

That’s why any fire tragedy is a good reminder for all to do a double-check of detection equipment to make sure it is in good working order in every part of the house. Fire doesn’t strike often, but it can be deadly when it does. So, it’s best to be prepared.
