Four Ole Miss players were named to The Associated Press All-SEC team Monday led by the league’s leading receiver.
A.J. Brown landed on the first team while offensive lineman Greg Little, defensive end Marquis Haynes and defensive tackle Breeland Speaks were each voted to the second team. Auburn’s Kerryon Johnson was named the conference’s offensive player of the year while Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith took defensive player of the year honors.
Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham and Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm shared the distinction of newcomer of the year. Georgia’s Kirby Smart was voted coach of the year after leading the Bulldogs to an SEC championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff in his second second season at the helm.
Alabama had the most All-SEC selections with 11.
Brown led the league with 1,252 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns, breaking Laquon Treadwell’s school record for receiving yards in a season. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound sophomore, who recently won the Conerly Trophy as Mississippi’s top college football player, had six 100-yard receiving games, becoming only the second Ole Miss player to ever record that many in a season.
Haynes finished with 45 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks in his final season at Ole Miss. Speaks, who moved to defensive end early in the season, had 67 tackles — second-most on the team — eight tackles for loss and seven sacks. In his first full season as the Rebels’ starting left tackle, Little, a sophomore and former five-star signee, helped block for the SEC’s top passing offense.
