With its season just 10 days away, Ole Miss’ men’s basketball team has suffered a blow to its frontcourt depth.

Freshman Karlis Silins reinjured his left knee and will require surgery, head coach Andy Kennedy said. Silins will be out an indefinite amount of time.

Silins tore his ACL in the knee just seven games into his freshman season last year and took a medical redshirt. At 6-foot-11 and 255 pounds, Silins is the second-tallest player on the roster behind 7-footer Dominik Olejniczak.

Silins played in just 39 minutes last season before the injury, averaging just 0.5 points and 0.6 rebounds a game, but was expected to get significantly more minutes off the bench this season. His injury leaves Olejniczak, junior college transfer Bruce Stevens and seniors Justas Furmanavicius and Marcanvis Hymon in the frontcourt.

Ole Miss will play an exhibition against North Alabama on Sunday before opening its season Nov. 10 against Louisiana at The Pavilion.
