Ole Miss men’s basketball has landed the first commitment of its 2018 recruiting class.
St. Petersburg guard Serrel Smith gave his verbal pledge to the Rebels on Tuesday. Smith, who recently visited Ole Miss, announced his commitment with a post to his Twitter account.
The 6-foot-3, 170-pound Smith, one of Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy’s primary targets for next year’s recruiting class, is ranked as a four-star prospect by ESPN and a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, Scout.com and 247Sports.com. Smith averaged more than 20 points a game last season as a junior, including a 39-point performance against perennial prep power Oak Hill Academy.
Ole Miss will lose four scholarship seniors, including guards Deandre Burnett and Markell Crawford, after next season. Assuming no further attrition with transfers, the Rebels will have six scholarships available for the 2018 class.
