Mother Nature never ceases to amaze us with her power and might.

Texas has never seen anything like the flooding that it is experiencing at the moment, with more than 30 inches fallen in some areas around Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city.

And there’s still a lot more to come.

The storm developed so quickly late last week that mass evacuations of the populous city weren’t reasonable. Now, however, officials have more than they can manage. We’re hoping swift federal action early this week can alleviate the suffering.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Harvey isn’t finished and has plans of heading up north, closer to us, later in the week. The slow-moving storm will drench Texas a few more days before finally pushing into Arkansas by Friday, according to the latest forecast models.

That means North Mississippi, including Oxford, could get several days of heavy rain beginning Wednesday. Our rainfall totals won’t be anywhere near Houston’s. We could get from 2 to 4 inches total, it appears. But that’s a lot.

We’re hoping the rains will be clear before Saturday night’s home Ole Miss football game against South Alabama kicks off and all indications are that they will.

But in times like this when others are in such need, we can’t worry too much about that. If it takes rains moving north to get them off of Texas so be it.
