Waldo, everybody’s favorite striped sweater wearing literary character, will be up to his usual antics and will be hiding in Oxford this summer. Where exactly will Waldo be? That’s for the people of Oxford to find out.
The famed children’s book character will be hiding in different stores around the square for the entire month of July. It’s up to the people of Oxford to find out exactly where he is.
The scavenger hunt is part of the Hunt For Waldo, an annual summer activity meant to help support local businesses on the Square. Twenty-five different businesses are taking part in the fun and celebrating thirty years of Where’s Waldo books. Additionally, two hundred and fifty other bookstores throughout the country will partake in Where’s Waldo? activities to celebrate the longevity and popularity of the books.
Created by Martin Handford, in 1987 Where’s Waldo? Has been translated into thirty different languages. The English publication has been printed 67 million times throughout the world. It remains on of the most popular children’s books of all time.
Participants must have a special passport, which can be obtained at Square Books Jr. The passport contains a list of the participating businesses. Once Waldo is found, participants will receive a stamp or signature at the store in which he was located at. Once at least 20 stamps are filled out in the passport, the participant is eligible for a chance to win prizes. The grand prize is a six-volume deluxe set of Where’s Waldo? books. The grand-prize drawing will be held Monday, July 31 at 4 p.m. at Off Square Books.
