Next week begins the basketball postseason in high school and the march to Jackson. The first step are the region tournaments, which determine who advances into the state playoffs and for some regions what seed they will be. For Oxford and Lafayette, they will not be able to play in the comfort of their gyms as both must make lengthy trips to their tournament sites.
Oxford will travel to Columbus on Tuesday for the first round of the Region 2-5A tournament, which is hosted by New Hope. The boys earned the No. 1 seed after claiming the regular season division title after defeating New Hope last Friday. They will face No. 4 seed West Point, who they swept during the regular season, at 5:30 p.m. The girls claimed the No. 2 seed after defeating New Hope last week and will face the host team for a third time this year at 7 p.m. If the boys win they will play in the championship game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of Saltillo and New Hope. If they lose they will play in the consolation game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against the Saltillo-New Hope loser to determine the No. 3 and 4 seeds. If the girls win they will play in the championship game on Friday at 6 p.m. against the West Point (1) – Saltillo (4). If they lose they will play in the consolation game at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Lafayette will head to the Delta as the Region 2-4A tournament is being hosted by Tunica Rosa Fort. The boys, who claimed the No. 5 seed, will play No. 4 seed Senatobia on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. They must win to keep their season alive, as only the top four teams will advance out of the tournament into the 4A state playoffs. If they win, they will play No. 1 seed Byhalia on Thursday at 5:30 in the semifinal round. The girls earned the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinal round and will play the winner of Ripley (3)-Rosa Fort (6) at 4 p.m. Thursday.
