The city of Oxford’s decision to be a leader in the recycling effort for Oxford and Lafayette County is appreciated.

Oxford has curbside recycling; however, there is none in the county, so drop-off locations for residents to easily find and access can make a big difference in the broader community’s health and how it contributes to the broader world.

That’s why the city’s effort to reopen a recycling drop-off location on Highway 7 deserves mention as a job well done. Officials could easily cite existing recycling locations at the City Shop on Molly Barr Road and the Recycling Center at the Oxford Landfill on County Road 321 as sufficient.

Instead, the city has responded to public calls to reopen the Highway 7 South center, just past Office Park Drive, after it was closed for a proposed Mississippi Department of Transportation project.

Never mind that phone calls seeking to get the center opened undoubtedly included many county residents. But the city understands what being a good neighbor means. It is equipped to handle recycling, and understands how important it is to our community’s well-being.

We appreciate such broad thinking, which helps make Oxford and Lafayette County a better community in which to live.
