A lifeguard at the Oxford City Pool rescued a child who almost drowned Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Oxford Police Department, at 2:40 p.m., police officers responded to the pool to assist an ambulance call.
“The staff at the pool as well as our officers assisted until EMS arrived,” said OPD Maj. Jeff McCutchen.
The child was alert and conscious when transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Oxford Park Commission’s Seth Gaines said the child was rescued by a lifeguard after he went under the water.
“We are very proud of our lifeguard for the exemplary skills that were shown during the rescue and afterwards,” Gaines said. “All of our lifeguards must be certified and spend many hours training and prepare for situations we hope that they never have to use.”
Gaines said he couldn’t release any more information since the incident is still under investigation.
