The Ole Miss women’s basketball program is bringing one of its most decorated players back to its staff.
Armintie Price Herrington has been hired as the team’s coordinator of player engagement, head coach Matt Insell announced Friday. It’s the second stint on staff for Herrington, who served as an assistant coach from 2009-12.
Herrington, who played for the Rebels from 2003-07, will help with on-campus recruiting and student-athlete development in her role as well as mentoring student-athletes and serving as an academic and alumni liason. Better known as Armintie Price before she got married, Herrington spent last season as a color commentator for the SEC Network Plus alternate channel.
“It’s always special when you have one of your own come back home and work in the program that she helped make so special,” Insell said in a statement. “Armintie is someone that I have become really close with over the last three years and someone I have much respect for as a person. Her accomplishments speak for themselves and to have someone that has accomplished so much as an athlete in our program working with our student athletes each day is a huge bonus for our program.”
Herrington, a Myrtle native, was an All-American and a two-time Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year during her career at Ole Miss and is still one of only three players in program history to score more than 2,000 career points. She was the third overall pick in the 2007 WNBA draft by the Chicago Sky and was named WNBA Rookie of the Year after averaging 7.9 points and six rebounds per game.
Herrington, who still holds nine records at Ole Miss, also played for the Atlanta Dream, Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics before retiring from the league in 2015.
