It’s been just about a year since the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors adopted building codes and subdivision regulations for the county. During that time, county officials have run into a few unforeseen issues and recently decided to appoint a committee to look into the codes and regulations.

The unprecedented and rapidly growing number of subdivisions that have sprung up and continue to expand caused the supervisors to adopt regulations last year.

“We’ve been in this for about a year now,” board president Jeff Busby said. “We’ve heard from a lot of builders and there may be a few things that need to be tweaked and some other things that may need to be added. So we decided to go back and take a look at it now after we’ve heard some discussion.”

County attorney David O’Donnell said the subdivision regulations address other types of developments as well.

The committee will be composed of supervisors David Rikard and Chad McLarty; from the planning commission, TJ Ray and Ray Garrett; county engineer Larry Britt, county attorney David O’Donnell, county building codes inspector Joel Hollowell and developer Gary Coleman.

Hollowell has been a busy man since being appointed the building inspector for the county about six months ago. The workload to perform building inspections and several other duties that deal with construction and development in the county is more than one person can handle. Supervisors are expected to appoint a part-time assistant at Tuesday evening’s meeting to assist Hollowell.
