Oxford sets up goalpost for fans to relive Ole Miss victory

A piece of Ole Miss history has landed in downtown Oxford, giving fans the perfect opportunity to relive last weekend’s unforgettable win against Georgia.
Thanks to a special loan from Ole Miss Athletics, the goalpost that triumphantly traveled down University Avenue Saturday night is now on temporary display for fans to enjoy.
The goalpost, which became a symbol of celebration after the Rebels’ victory, is proudly set up in front of the “Welcome to Oxford” mural behind City Hall.
The idea to showcase the iconic goalpost came from Mayor Robyn Tannehill.
“As I watched the goalposts coming down University Avenue, my first thought was, ‘Please don’t let those poles hook our Christmas lights!’” Tannehill said on social media. “My second thought was, ‘We have to set up a goalpost somewhere in town for photos!’”
Ole Miss Athletic Director Keith Carter approved the idea, and the city’s Superintendent of Building and Grounds Greg Pinion, and his crew brought the vision to life.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to bring their families and friends to take pictures with the goalpost, but a few ground rules apply:
- No climbing or hanging on the goal post – While welded back together, it’s only a prop and not built to bear weight.
- Be respectful. The area is under surveillance, and the goalpost is far too heavy for quick getaways.
Tannehill said the goalpost will remain at the mural until after the Egg Bowl on Nov. 29.
