Lafayette County voters followed the statewide trend in state and national elections Tuesday night.
Just shy of 70% of registered voters voted in the election. Of the 33,212 registered voters, 23,159 elected to exercise their right to vote.
According to Circuit Court Clerk Jeff Busby, precincts reported long lines but very few issues.
“Overall, it went well,” he said.
Busby said a good number of people needed to vote via affidavit because they hadn’t voted for four years and their addresses had changed.
More than 5,800 people voted absentee. Busby said the highest number of absentee votes occurred in 2020, which makes sense given the pandemic when people were staying home. However, this year saw the second-highest number of absentee votes.
Close to 60% of Lafayette County voters voted for Donald Trump with 38% voting for Kamala Harris. Across Mississippi, 61% voted for Trump and 37.7% voted for Harris.
The other candidates collectively received about 2% of the votes.
Lafayette County voters also chose Sen. Roger Wicker over his opposing candidate Ty Pinkins with Wicker garnering 63.5% of local votes and Pinkins receiving 36.1% of the votes. Statewide, Wicker received 63% of the votes to Pinkins 37%.
In the 1st Congressional District US House race, 63.6% of the votes went to Rep. Trent Kelly, and 36.1% went to Dianne Black. In the entire district, 70% voted for Kelly, and 30% voted for Black.
