Cofield’s Corner: Isabel and Leonard Levy

Isabel and Leonard Levy were among the first Jewish business owners to call Oxford home. They arrived right after World War II, opened their first location on the Square, and never looked back. They more than left their mark.

Many families on a tight budget were allowed to charge their needs until payday. The Levys, along with store manager Paul James, were the first to have black customers enter through the front door instead of the back. Leonard’s heart was big and on display his entire life, well into his 80s.

In the end, Leonard would walk into Golden Years Nursing Home, past men 10 years younger, and direct Isabel in her wheelchair out the door and onto the Van Buren sidewalk for her daily stroll.

It was a sight to see. One that made grown men tighten their lips and give a slow nod, while sorority girls teared up at the way true love finishes.

The character that we pride Oxford on lived with the Levys and their well-remembered grocery store.

They are missed by all.
