As this winter storm drags on and we are all being asked to stay indoors, North Mississippi families may be running out of ideas of what to do indoors. Here are some fun ideas that might make the hours go by faster and avoid cabin fever.
Bake-off: Warm up the house with the smell of fresh-baked goodies. Get the family together for a baking session, trying out new recipes or making old favorites. From cookies to savory treats, the kitchen becomes the heart of the home.
Game Night: Dig out those board games and turn the living room into a game central. Play classic favorites or try out new ones suitable for all ages. It’s not just about winning; it’s about enjoying each other’s company.
Karaoke or Sing Along: Nothing lifts the spirits like music and sing alongs can make it fun for the whole family. There are sing along videos with words on You Tube, or you might have some music books in the house. Spotify also shows words along with the music, so you can all sing along.
Trip Down Memory Lane: Break out the family photo album, videos, or virtual album and remember vacations, trips and special occasions. Ask family member to talk about what they remember about these events.
Silly Dog Tricks: Teach your dog or cat a new trick. It takes some encouragement and reinforcement for your pet but there are plenty of silly tricks that will entertain your pet and your family. Example, use the word “bang” to have the dog play dead. Teach your dog the names of specific toys. “Go get your ball” vs just a random toy. Reward the dog only if he brings the ball. Teach the dog to give a high five vs. just shaking. The paw is raised more vertically that a just a raising a limp paw.
Movie Night: Grab the popcorn, blankets, and pillows, and let’s have a movie night! Each family member gets to pick a favorite movie, ensuring there’s something for everyone. You may have some movie DVD’s or movie on streaming services.
Indoor Easter Egg Hunt: Find those plastic easter eggs and easter baskets and use several rooms to hide the eggs. Make it a game for who finds the most. For smaller children, they love the activity, and the winner can hide eggs the next time around.
Craft Corner: Unleash your artistic side with a DIY craft corner. Grab some art supplies and dive into creative projects. From snow globes to winter decorations, the possibilities are endless. This activity is all about letting imaginations run wild.
Indoor Picnic Paradise: Forget the cold outside – have a picnic indoors! Spread out blankets, make some sandwiches, deviled eggs, potato salad, and indulge in a cozy indoor picnic. It’s a simple yet delightful way to bring a touch of summer warmth to the winter blues.
Virtual Adventure: Use technology to explore new worlds together. Take virtual museum tours, visit far-off places online, or even join an interactive class. It’s a fun and educational way to make the most of indoor time.
Storytelling: Gather around and create a story together. Each family member adds a twist to the plot, resulting in a collaborative tale. It’s a wonderful way to let creativity flow and strengthen family bonds.
