As the temperature drops, it’s important to remember that our furry friends need extra care and attention. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends that pets be kept indoors during cold weather, especially when the temperature drops below freezing.

According to the forecast for Oxford, the temperature is expected to be below freezing for several days through Wednesday. The National Weather Service is forecasting highs in the low teens and lows near 0 degrees.  This means that pet owners should take extra precautions to ensure their pets are safe and warm.

“Even if your pet is used to being outside, they can still be at risk for hypothermia and frostbite,”  said the American Veterinary Medical Association. “It’s important to provide them with a warm, dry shelter and plenty of blankets to snuggle up in.”

In addition to providing shelter, pet owners should also make sure their pets have access to fresh water and food. “Pets burn more calories in the winter to stay warm, so it’s important to make sure they have plenty of food and water,” states the American Veterinary Medical Association.
