The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is now turning to the public for help in finding the person who sent a bomb threat against Lafayette County schools on Thursday.

A $1,000 reward is being offered by CrimeStoppers for anyone who provides evidence or information that leads to the arrest of an individual, or individuals, who “terrorized the school” with threats this week, according to a release from the sheriff’s department.

Around 9:50 a.m. on Thursday, several students were air-dropped a text message to their devices which said, “I’m going to bomb all the Lafayette Schools today. Be careful and watch your back.”

All Lafayette schools went on a cautionary standby as the sheriff’s department, along with an explosive detection K-9 from the University Police Department and officers with the Oxford Police Department, completed a sweep of the school and the perimeter of the area. Students were allowed to return to their classes as scheduled around Noon.

The threat was the second one made against Lafayette schools this week. On Tuesday, a student discovered a threat written on a bathroom stall at Lafayette High School that implied someone was going to shoot up the school with Thursday’s date written beneath it.

An increased number of law enforcement officers have been on the Lafayette County School District campus all week.

The investigation is still ongoing, according to the sheriff’s department, and each law enforcement agency will continue to work to find the person responsible.
