Oxford Community Market concludes its season in December each year, but this year the local market is trying something new.

OXCM originally concluded in November, but executive director Betsy Chapman decided to extend the season, which begins in March, to mid-December. Now, Chapman is taking the venture another step further.

“An extended market season that reflects Mississippi’s long growing season has always been a goal of (Oxford Community Market),” Chapman said. “We’ve found that our customers are thrilled by the variety of cool-season veggies still available this time of year.”

The market will continue through January, with the next Winter Pop-Up Market taking place on Jan. 7 from noon to 3 p.m. The market will run every Tuesday, concluding on Jan. 28. Oxford’s 100-percent local farmers market features produce, baked goods and other items made in Lafayette County and surrounding communities.

Chapman noted there were more than 15 different types of winter vegetables at their first winter market, including carrots, lettuces, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage.

“Another great thing about the winter market is that it keeps our local food community of customers and farmers cohesive and strong,” Chapman said. “OXCM is really more than a market. We are building a community of support for local food and have created a platform for outreach work to improve access to healthy food for our friends and in need.”

The market works with the SNAP/WIC programs, as well as the Market Fresh gift card program. The community market is held at the Old Armory Pavilion.
