Chargers, Commodores and Blue Devils playing in jamborees this weekend

All three local high school football teams will get their final live action of fall camp before the start of the regular season this weekend.
Oxford is hosting their annual jamboree weekend on Friday and Saturday, brining together 13 other schools, including Water Valley, at Bobby Holcomb Field. Lafayette is also playing a jamboree game this weekend, traveling to South Panola.
The two nightcaps for the Oxford Jamboree will feature the Chargers varsity team on Friday night and the Water Valley varsity on Saturday night.
Oxford, coming off a 9-3 season in 2019 where they made an appearance in the 6A playoffs, will be playing 3A Charleston. The Tigers went 11-3 last year, losing to North Panola in the third round of the playoffs.
Water Valley, playing their first big scrimmage since their 2018 3A state championship run, will be playing New Albany on Saturday evening. New Albany went 7-5 a year ago, losing in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs.
For Lafayette, the jamboree game is a bit of a homecoming. The Commodores will go to South Panola on Friday for a 6 p.m. game against head coach Michael Fair’s former team. Fair’s first job in high school football came at South Panola, and South Panola’s current head coach, Ricky Woods, is still one of his mentors. It’ll be a tough tune-up scrimmage for the Commodores, going against a 6A school that went 5-2 in their district one season ago.
Oxford is charging $5 for admission to the jamboree. For the full schedule of the Oxford Jamboree, see below:
