NWS confirms EF2 tornado hit Lafayette County

The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF2 tornado touched down in Lafayette County during the four-day storm system that wreaked havoc in north Mississippi and west Tennessee from April 2 through April 6.

According to a preliminary report released Friday, the tornado touched down at around 6:12 p.m. on April 5, northwest of Tula.

The estimated peak winds were 120 mph. It traveled 40 miles and was 600 yards wide.

One person was injured.

The tornado formed along Highway 331 between the communities of Cornish and Tula, producing minor tree damage. It quickly intensified as it crossed Highway 6 near Lafayette Springs, snapping numerous power poles and trees. The damage was consistent with an EF2 tornado.

The tornado crossed into northwest Pontotoc County, causing significant damage to trees and utility poles before dissipating at 7:11 p.m.

It was the first confirmed tornado to touch down in Lafayette County since an EF3 hit the Pine Flat community in 2011, destroying several homes in the southern part of the county.

According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, 17 homes were damaged in Lafayette County; however, information is still being reviewed.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that at least 14 tornadoes touched down in Mississippi during the four-day storm system.
