It was certainly a different Square. Instead of bars, restaurants, and boutiques, the town’s crown jewels were hardware and drug stores, business offices, and a variety of family needs shops. 

Saturday was “country come to town.”

According to the old timers, the Lafayette County Courthouse was near carnival-like as farmers peddled their fruits and vegetables, local politicians worked the crowd, children ran to and fro and their dogs, and many a hot game of dominoes ensued. 

That was your granddaddy’s Square.
