A man from India living in Georgia illegally, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a wire fraud phone scam.
Nasruddin Bhai Nooruddin, 52, was arrested in August in Lafayette County by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office who set up a sting at the home of a man who contracted them when he suspected he was being scammed.
Nooruddin pleaded guilty in September 2024. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Debra M. Brown sentenced him to serve 60 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release and ordered him to pay $104,000 in restitution to his victims.
The victim reported that someone with Amazon called them and asked if they had purchased a $4,000 computer. The victim told the caller he did not. The caller said the victim’s assets were frozen and the Social Security Administration would be notifying them. The victim was later contacted by who he believed to be the Social Security Administration. The scammer told the victim they needed to withdraw all their money from the bank and only leave $1,500 in their account. The victim followed the directions of the scammers.
The scammers advised the victim that they would pick up the money at the victim’s residence for safekeeping. The victim felt something was wrong and wanted to report it. The Sheriff’s Office then set up an operation to arrest the scammers at the victim’s home when they arrived to pick up the money.
Nooruddin and Chaturali Alauidin Roy, 69, also of Georgia, were arrested. Roy is still awaiting trial.
Nooruddin was also charged with a scam that occurred in May 2024 in North Carolina. Posing again as a federal agent, Nasruddin told another victim that Ticketmaster had a data breach and that the victim was in the group of compromised accounts and that they needed to withdraw all their money and send it to him.
