An outdoor warning siren in Abbeville that had been out of operation is now back in service, according to Lafayette County Emergency Management.
On Tuesday, the Lafayette EMA announced on Facebook that the siren in Abbeville had been replaced and was back online.
The siren had been out of operation since December when the pole supporting the siren rotted below ground level and collapsed, damaging the siren head in the process.
North East Mississippi Electric Power Association donated the pole and provided crews to set it up.
Another siren in College Hill went out of service in November when the siren had a failure of the central processing unit board. That siren was back online last month, according to Lafayette County Public Information Officer Beau Moore.
While the outdoor warning sirens are another tool to alert citizens, they shouldn’t be the only way residents get severe weather warnings. Outdoor warning sirens are not intended to be heard by folks who are indoors and their range is about 1 to 2 miles.
Other ways to receive warnings include the Lafayette County Sheriff’s app, the Lafayette County EMA app, CodeRed, the Nixle app via the city of Oxford and having a NOAA weather radio.
