Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill wants another four years at the helm.
Tannehill qualified earlier this week to run in the June municipal election to retain her seat as the mayor of Oxford.
The qualification period for the June election started on Jan. 2.
As of Thursday, aldermen Mark Huelse, Ward 2; Kesha Howell Atkinson, Ward 4; Preston Taylor, Ward 5; and Jason Bailey; Ward 6, have qualified for the election. At-large Aldermen Mary Martha Crowe and Brian Hyneman, Ward 3, told the EAGLE they would be qualifying but had not gotten their paperwork filed by Thursday.
The qualification period ends on Jan. 31.
Ward 1 Alderman Rick Addy has not yet qualified to run in the election.
However, William Summers Mayo qualified on Tuesday to run for Ward 1 alderman. As of Thursday, he was the only non-incumbent to throw their hat into the ring.
While they had not yet completed the official forms as of Thursday, Aldermen Mary Martha Crowe and Brian Hyneman told the EAGLE last week they intended to qualify to run.
City Hall was closed Friday due to the winter storm.
To qualify, candidates must have lived in the ward where they are seeking election for alderman for at least two years and have not been convicted of a felony. If they are running as a Republican or Democrat they will pay a $10 fee when filing their paperwork at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall.
Independent candidates do not pay a fee but will need 50 signatures from any qualified voter in Oxford.
The primary for the municipal election is on April 1. If necessary, a runoff will occur on April 22.
Absentee voting for the primary begins on Feb. 17. The general election is on June 3. There will not be a runoff for the general election. The most votes will win.
All Oxford registered voters will vote at the Oxford Conference Center.
Qualification packets are available at City Hall and the Lafayette County Clerk’s Office; however, they must be turned in at the Clerk’s Office at City Hall.
The EAGLE will post weekly updates on who has qualified until the end of the qualification period.
