Incumbent aldermen begin qualifing for June election

Four aldermen wasted little time to qualify to run in this year’s city elections.
The qualification period for the June election started on Thursday.
Aldermen Mark Huelse, Kesha Howell Atkinson and Preston Taylor signed the necessary paperwork to run for their prospective wards on Thursday. Alderman Jason Bailey qualified on Friday morning.
The qualification period ends on Jan. 31.
While she had not yet signed the official forms, Alderman Mary Martha Crowe told the EAGLE earlier this week she intended to run for her at-large seat again.
Mayor Robyn Tannehill also confirmed her intent to run to the Eagle earlier this week.
To qualify, candidates must have lived in the ward where they are seeking election for alderman for at least two years and have not been convicted of a felony. If they are running as a Republican or Democrat they will pay a $10 fee when filing their paperwork at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall.
Independent candidates do not pay a fee but will need 50 signatures from any qualified voter in Oxford.
The primary for the municipal election is on April 1. If necessary, a runoff will occur on April 22.
Absentee voting for the primary begins on Feb. 17. The general election is on June 3. There will not be a runoff for the general election. The most votes will win.
All Oxford registered voters will vote at the Oxford Conference Center.
Qualification packets are available at City Hall and the Lafayette County Clerk’s Office; however, they must be turned in at the Clerk’s Office at City Hall.
The EAGLE will post weekly updates on who has qualified until the end of the qualification period.
