Chargers lodge first shutout of the season

The Oxford Chargers lodged their first shutout of the season against 7A district foe Lewisburg 43-0 in Friday night action. With this win, the Chargers are the number 1 team in 1-7A and will host the 2-7A number four seed on Friday, Nov. 15.

The Chargers (5-4 overall, 4-0 district) will travel to Hernando for the final game of the regular season Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.

It was all the Chargers tonight as they scored on the first possession after recovering an attempted onside kick by Lewisburg. Bryant Mix was on the recovery. Quarterback Drew Dean hits Kingston Gregory for the 32-yard touchdown reception with 10:20 to go in the first. The two-point conversation was good for the 8-0 lead.

It was a Dean to Levi Blount 48-yard touchdown that put Oxford further ahead 15-0 at the 1:34 first-quarter mark. Michael Thompson had five of five extra-point kicks for the night.

Lewisburg missed a 40-yard field goal.

In the second quarter, Oxford scored four touchdowns, one pass, one run, one blocked punt and one punt return.

Blount scored on a 54-yard pass at the 11:46 mark. Jamarion Pegues scored on a four-yard run with 8:25 left.

Jai Johnson blocked a punt, picked it up and ran five yards for the score with 6:35 left in the half for the 36-0 lead after Thompson’s extra point kick.

William Quinton took a punt return 67 yards but fumbled it. Kamar Houston picked it up at the two and scored with 4:00 left in the half. The PAT put the Chargers up 43-0 for what turned out to be the last score of the game.

The teams played under a running clock in the second half. Pegues had an interception in the third quarter. Swayze McClure got a sack.
