With students back in town and football around the corner, there will be plenty of events in Oxford over the next few months.
During their regular meeting on Tuesday, the Oxford Board of Aldermen approved several permits for parades and other events.
However, one popular event that doesn’t appear to be returning is the Square Jam – where the University of Mississippi basketball teams would be introduced participate in games and skills challenges.
The university did not respond to questions as of Thursday afternoon regarding why the event was canceled for this fall; however, Visit Oxford is planning a new musical event to take the place of the basketball event – the inaugural Square Jam Session Music Event.
The new event will occur from 5 to 8:45 p.m. on the Square in front of City Hall.
The free concert will consist of two bands. The names of the bands were not released as final details and contracts are still being worked out, according to Visit Oxford officials.
There will be food truck parking behind City Hall.
Other permits were granted for the following events:
- Second Line Parade from 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 30. The public will gather inside The Lyric Oxford and then walk with the Second Line band to The Powerhouse Community Arts Center for a concert and art show. The event is free and open to the public. There will be no floats or motorized vehicles at the event that is memory and honor of the late Ron Shapiro.
- Ole Miss Homecoming Parade by the Student Activities Association from 5:15 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 on the Square. The parade will begin in Lyceum Circle, head down east on University Avenue, up South Lamar and around the east side of the courthouse where it will end.
- Witches Ride from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 21. The parade will start at Mid-Town Shopping Center, go down North Lamar toward the Square and back down to the shopping center.
