Yes indeed, for the kids of Lafayette County, it was a big ole deal when Jerry “The King” Lawler came to town.
Every Saturday morning at 1 AM every TV on the street was on Memphis Wrestling and we practiced our moves on younger siblings.
Lance Russel and Dave Brown were icons as well. We hung on their every word.
That night in 1979, we were abuzz. And then he entered the Oxford Activity Center and the rest was a night to log into our childhood memories.
We screamed and yelled and jumped around and when The King won, we roared. Back at home, we slept the sleep of the well-satisfied-with-life children. It was Oxford at its finest for us.
